Cheddleton, near Leek, is a beautiful quiet spot. You start from the Churnet Valley Railway, which still runs steam trains. It was rescued by the North Staffordshire Railway Society in the 1970s, and its signal box came from Elton Crossing in Sandbach.
From there you head down the valley, where the Caldon Canal, the River Churnet and the railway run side by side through the woods, to Consall Forge and the Black Lion, a pub you can only reach on foot, by boat or by train. Then it's back up the valley.
