Just over the Cheshire border north of Leek, Rudyard Lake is a beautiful spot. I came in from Congleton down Dial Lane and Beat Lane towards Rushton Spencer, and the car park turn is just before the Leek road.
The reservoir was built in the 18th century to feed the Caldon Canal. Kipling's parents courted here and named him after it. A lap is 4.4 miles, and if you've got kids, the miniature steam train along the shore makes for a shorter walk.
