Knighton is a tiny hamlet in the Staffordshire countryside with a surprising past. In 1911 Cadbury built a factory here on the Shropshire Union Canal to make chocolate crumb, a dried mix of milk, sugar and cocoa that kept well and travelled well. Narrowboats carried it from this wharf down to Bournville, where it became Dairy Milk.
The canal is peaceful now. From the wharf the route cuts across the fields to Peggs Lane and on to the Anchor Inn, a proper old canal pub, before heading back along the towpath.
