This might be the best ridge walk near Liverpool. From the little Sandstone Trail car park on Simons Lane you drop into what used to be Frodsham golf course. The Woodland Trust has taken it over and there are new paths through it that aren't on the OS map yet.
From there it's into Frodsham Woods and over Woodhouse Hill, out across the farmland of Snidley Moor, then back along the Sandstone Trail under the red cliffs. The last climb up to the monument is steep, and worth every step: the Mersey, the Liverpool skyline and on a clear day the Welsh hills.
Allow one and a half to two and a half hours.
