Acton, just outside Nantwich, takes its name from Actune, oak town, from when it sat on the edge of the Forest of Mondrem. St Mary's Church has a tower from 1180, the oldest church tower in Cheshire.
The first half of the route follows the Two Saints Way, a 92 mile pilgrimage path between Chester and Lichfield cathedrals, out over the fields. The second half comes back along the towpaths of the Llangollen and Shropshire Union canals.
