Don't forget to explore what's right under your nose. Before the 1830s Crewe was a tiny hamlet. Then the Grand Junction Railway chose it for its locomotive works, and it grew into an engineering town with the loco works, coach works, steel works and later Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
The railway arrived in 1837 along with the Crewe Arms hotel, and it's still one of the great rail junctions, with lines to Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Holyhead. This run takes in the stations, the old works, Queens Park and the town centre.
