A trip through a post-industrial landscape that's become surprisingly green. From Wigg Island you pass the new peace garden and the pub that played the Archer in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, then cross the old Runcorn Widnes bridge and go through West Bank to Spike Island.

The Trans Pennine Trail then follows the Sankey Canal and the Mersey towards Sankey Valley near Warrington, before you come back past Moore nature reserve and down beside the Manchester Ship Canal.

It's 14 miles, so it makes a great bike ride, long run or a big day's walk.
