From Ridge Quarry you head along the ridge with Manchester spread out below, then drop through the woods to the Peak Forest Canal and on to the River Goyt at Roman Bridge. It isn't Roman, it's a packhorse bridge from around 1700, but nobody's going to stop calling it that now.

You follow the Cown Edge Way for a while, then come down to Roman Lakes, built in the 18th century to power Mellor Mill. When the mill burned down they became a Victorian pleasure park. Under the huge rail viaduct you pass the old sluices from the Goyt, then climb back up to the start.

Just under 4 miles, with a slightly longer alternative if you want it.
