I love running beside a river, and I've done the Dee plenty of times, so I fancied following the Trent. Before going downstream to Stoke, Stone and beyond, I thought I'd start where it starts: the Head of Trent near Biddulph.

From Greenway Bank Country Park at Knypersley Pool, instead of the usual lap of the reservoir, you head south through the parish of Brown Edge to Ball Green and Norton Green, picking up the young river as it trickles out of the hills.
