Malpas is one of those old Cheshire villages that rewards a slow look: the monument, the pubs, the high street and a lot of history in a small space.
From there the route heads out past farms and grazing cattle into open countryside with big views over the Cheshire Plain. The goal is Overton Scar, a wooded outcrop where layers of red sandstone break out of the ground. It's not well known and it's quite a surprise when you get there.
On a clear day you can see the Welsh hills from the way back.
