Bidston Hill isn't tall, just 231 feet, but that's enough for a commanding view over the Wirral and across to Liverpool.
From the Tam O'Shanter Urban Farm car park you go through the woods and onto the lowland heath, then up the sandstone ridge past Bidston Windmill, which dates from the late 1700s. Look out for the rock carvings near the top. I rushed past most of them, but some are thought to be Norse-Irish from around 1000 AD, including a sun goddess.
Further on is the observatory, built to keep time for the one o'clock gun at Morpeth Dock, and the lighthouse behind it, which worked as a pair with Leasowe. The loop finishes round Bidston Moss.
