Astbury is a pretty little village on the edge of Congleton, centred on a village green with black and white timber framed houses, the Egerton Arms and St Mary's Church, which dates back to the 12th century.
The route starts about a mile and a half away at Astbury Mere, a sand quarry from the 1930s to the 1980s that's now a quiet lake. From there it's over the fields to the village, then back along the Macclesfield Canal.
