Great Barrow is a pretty village in the countryside east of Chester. The name comes from the Old English for a grove or small wood, and the sandstone church of St Bartholomew dates from the 1600s, on a much older site.

From the White Horse, which looks a great place for a drink afterwards, the route heads over the fields to the lonely church at Plemstall, then through Mickle Trafford and Guilden Sutton and back.
